I was happy to get an email from Ed Blammo a few weeks ago about doing Dre Day bags again this year. For the last 3 years Ed's been throwing a party on his and Dr. Dre's birthday and giving out a free 40oz. to the first 40 people that show up. Said 40's come in a brown paper bag with a screenprinted graphic by yours truly. Up top are the mock ups of this years bag. You can see the last one I did here. John, my sometimes boss over at Cold Cuts Merch asked me a while back to come up with some ideas for promo shirts. The sketch up top went over pretty well. If you're from PA you might notice it's a nod to the old Hatfield packing logo. A logo I once received a cease and desist for using on t-shirts for my band back in high school.

I originally came up with this idea for the earliest incarnation of Artificial Dissemination. It then became a threadless submission and finally was licensed to a Korean clothing company. I was never 100% satisfied with the finish so I decided to revisit it for the upcoming "Artificial Dissemination 2" show at Phantom Hand. This ugly bastard is going to be printed as a 2 color on chipboard for the wall and on t-shirts as well. Come by January 27th and check it out.

I meant to post this a while ago but anyway, last Christmas Mike Wohlberg gave me one of the coolest gifts I've ever received. This crazy dude hand painted a vinyl action figure featuring my "Been Here Forever" alien. If you're not familiar with Mike's work you should be, he's consistently creating some of the best metal fueled artwork the city of Philadelphia has ever seen. Check out his portfolio here.

The above spots are part of my contribution to a trailer for a new show called "Hometown Tattoo." It's a series being produced by my pal Brad Kingett over at Risen Industries. In total I produced 7 spot illustrations for the title pages. Mike Wohlberg and I also submitted work for use as set dressing so look out for that stuff in the background of future episodes. I literally just finished printing and cutting this new print for not 1 but 2 Halloween themed Gallery Shows. "LURKERS" is a 4 color print on orange French Stock. It'll be sharing wall space with some really awesome artist's work over at Masthead's "Monster Show: Year 2" and Gallery 309's "Autumn Spell." The former opens on Oct. 22nd and the latter on Nov. 4th. Hopefully I'll see you there.

Lately I've been working on some editorial spots for use as a new promo piece. I haven't come up with anything I'm really happy with yet but I thought the one above came out kinda cool. It was inspired by a PW article about the neighborhood watch program. I played around with some toothier paper and grease pencils for some of the elements, I feel like more texture is always a good thing. More soon...

The Wonder Years are gearing up for a major U.S. tour in a few weeks and asked me to come up with some new merch designs. They'll be selling the top one on the road and the bottom will be available exclusively at the Cold Cuts store. They also brought a handful of my friends on board this time around. Be on the lookout for tees featuring the works of Greg Christman, Kirsten Harper and Brian Mietz. All awesome Philly based creative types.

In related news, Soupy started a clothing line called "Shallow Water." He'll be releasing a new shirt each month with proceeds going to different charities. I was asked to create the logo and had some fun putting it together on scratchboard. Keep our eyes peeled, from what I understand these shirts are being printed in very limited quantities. As I mentioned recently, I've been working on a comic project in my spare time. This is my first attempt at something like this since 10th grade so it's been something of an adventure. Above are a few marker studies, the very top is a piss poor De Niro portrait. I've never been good with likenesses. The others are panel sketches. I can never seem to focus on one thing at a time so I'm already playing with color schemes. If this insomnia keeps up I might actually finish this thing.

ARTIFICIAL DISSEMINATION

Artificial Dissemination was originally a show conceived by and featuring Kirsten Harper, Christine Larsen and myself but after several false starts it's finally opening on Saturday July 9th. Masthead has been kind enough to host our collective brainchild and we've increased the number of participants to nearly 30. I have to give Kirsten all the credit for the awesome title which alone was enough reason not to let this idea hit the dustbin. Anyway, I hope you can all make it out to our celebration of Propaganda art, printmaking and of course free beer.

The print up top was my submission to Masthead's "Cafeteria Show" a few weeks ago. I wasn't able to attend but from what I hear there's a closing coming up in June. It was inspired by the matchbook cover and soda bottle below. Both procured on junk store excursions in the last year or two. Final print is 3 colors on creme stock. The yellow over printed on the blue and burgundy makes the green and orange/brown. Print Magic!

I recently had the opportunity to give a poster design lecture and assignment to Christian Patchell's junior illustration class. The Wonder Years were kind enough to get involved so, I assigned a 3 color gigposter for their upcoming show in San Diego. Over the course of 3 weeks Patch and I art directed from sketch to finish and the band chose one design from the group. The poster above by Chrystal Ben is the design being screenprinted to promote the show. I put this wraparound cover together for Hella Down a week ago or so. I turned it around really quick but I'm pretty happy with the result. It's rare that I throw any major lighting effects into my work but I think the heavy shadows add some depth and break things apart from the cluttered pattern on the back panel. Once I get some release info on the record I'll post it.

This is by far the coolest project I've been commissioned for this year. Apparently these kids in New Zealand put together a fest on a yearly basis that's held on the grounds of an abandoned college campus, awesome right? Tomorrow night I'm participating in the World's Fair Art Show at Shadow's Space. If you scroll down there's plenty of previews of my contribution. I stopped by while curators Patch and Concetta were hanging last night and the show looks fantastic. There's over 100 pieces contributed by 10 different artists. Opening is 6-10 THIS FRIDAY. The always awesome Kevin Mercer also has a solo show at Masthead opening the same night. I assure you there's time for both, I'll be stopping over there early to check things out. Finally, Meathaus gave me some love the other day for my World's Fair contributions. It's the only art blog I actually read regularly so go take a look.

This Saturday is the Video Violence show at the I House. Up top is the promo card with all the particulars designed by the show's curator Justin Miller. Below that is my submission. After a long night of porch drinking my pal Anthony convinced me to take on "King of New York" for this piece. I wanted to avoid horror movies so I took his advice. The finish is photocopy and color paper collage, acrylic and ink on the actual video sleeve (you also get the tape with it.) Over the last few months I've moved my studio twice. This has made me realize I have way too much stuff so in order to streamline things a little I've got some deals going in the store. Not only is the Mystery Tube back (now only $30 for 5 prints) I'm offering up some original art at very reasonable prices. So far the originals from 4 of the 5 Wonder Years tour series posters are available. More to come in the next week or so as I shuffle through my files. Keep an eye out.

Last night I finished my sixth poster for Ed Blammo's monthly SOLID GOOD TIMES party at Medusa Lounge. I still find it kind of bizarre that I've been hired to design club fliers but the response seems pretty good thus far. Plus I can't complain about leafing through 60's nudie mags for collage pieces. Mark your calendars, Oct. 1st is the opening of "Hallowed Halloween" at PROXIMITY Gallery in Fishtown. I trust it will be an enjoyable evening considering my bother Sam is curating and from what I understand this is also the first joint venture between the always awesome Philly Cartoonist Society and some other assholes that edit my blog posts. My piece above is the product of several draining weeks of piss poor sketches based on 50's and 60's Halloween decorations. Then somehow I fell asleep at my drawing table with a fucked up brush pen in hand and this happened. I promise it's even prettier in person.

There's few things as impressive to me as 300 sweaty kids packing into a room to watch a band nobody outside that room has ever heard of. I tend to think Mike Pelone felt the same. Mike will always be at the top of my short list of promoters who really have an interest in music over money. He was pretty much the only person keeping the local scene alive in Lansdale for a few years and although I doubt he realized it at the time, creating posters for his shows was the only thing keeping me busy and sane while going through my divorce. I really didn't know what to think when I heard Mike had passed away earlier this month. The viewing just seemed surreal and it really didn't hit me til I was painting out his name for the memorial poster. Despite the circumstances I'm really glad Dave gave me the opportunity to create some artwork to remember our friend. Peace Buddy.

Prints of the poster will be available at the show with all proceeds going to the Pelone family.

WORLD'S FAIR UPDATES

I should have thought to make the last post a really long one but anyway, it appears that Culture Twist has finally made my P.E. Elephant t-shirt available. They added a crappy distressed texture to it but I guess that is the price you pay for selling the rights to your work. In other news Panhandle Print gave the "Nobodies" opening a nice write up. BACK FROM THE WEST COAST

I spent the last week in Vegas/L.A. doing as little as possible but upon arriving home I was happy to see a pic of my contribution to the Wonder Years upcoming reissue in my mailbox. ALT Press already ran a story on it so I guess it's OK that I post it here. Behold (a taste) of the fruits of my labor......

PRAYER OF THE SEA BISHOP

This Friday the Anthony Pedro curated "All hands on Deck" show opens at the Chapterhouse. My submission (above) depicts the creature known as the Sea Bishop, said to have been presented to the King of Poland in the 16th century. Upon being released by some clergy members this slimy beauty flashed the sign of the cross and hightailed it back into the ocean. The legend alone was enough to inspire me but it doesn't hurt that the thing looks like something out of Planet of the Apes crossed with a Japanese movie monster. The opening runs from 7-10 and I'll have some of these prints in the Etsy store at some point as well.

My latest for Parade of Flesh is for the Women side project Friendo. In an effort to meet my deadline I tried something a little different this time around. The face is scanned from a 60's nudie mag and I tried to keep the other elements pretty simple and minimal. All in all I'm pretty happy with the outcome. 2 color print on white (orange is transparent overprinted on the blue/green to make the brown). It'll be up in the etsy store in a few weeks. Also, the closing reception for "Eating Dandelions" is at Masthead tomorrow night. I'll actually be there this time, promise.

Thanks to Tecate and a couple grilled cheese sandwiches I wrapped up printing my submission for Masthead Print Studio's "Eating Dandelions" show. The show is spring themed (with a twist) and I can't imagine a better way to celebrate the change of seasons than telling Septa to eat it. This evolved from a sketchbook drawing and I think the Woody Guthrie line ties it all together. The show opens next friday, you can get more info here.

Just finished printing this poster for the Wonder Years Philly show in two weeks. It's a split fountain and 2 solid colors on goldenrod french stock. If you know me, you might get the reference. My buddy Anthony Pedro sent me a call for entries for an all digital opening that's being shown before a comedy show or something. I honestly don't know all the details but I submitted the above piece for the show, titled "Damaged Goods." I'll put all the info up when I have it. Next Friday (May 7th) Exit Skateshop is hosting it's 3rd annual Deckheads show. I'm proud to announce that my new website is up and fully functional. I managed to teach myself dreamweaver in just under a week and just put the finishing touches on it tonite. In other news, Culture Twist is producing my Public Enemy inspired Elephant T-shirt in Korea, I'm working on a poster for Awesome Color and contributing to a few gallery openings in the upcoming months. This Vivian Girls poster is my latest for Parade of Flesh. Yellow and process magenta straight out of the can on white stock. I kinda went nuts with the halftones but I think it works for the image. I'm just a little afraid my work is getting too pretty. Luckily it looks like I've got some noise band stuff lined up. YAY VECTOR

I recently created this logo for my buddy Nick's recording services. I haven't really done any branding work in a while so this was a little bit of a challenge, on top of that I opted to go vector so it could be re-sized without looking crappy. Overall I'm pretty happy that I was able to make something "clean" but still fairly consistent with my other work. Check out Nick's work here. He offers some really good rates for top notch recording and mixing services.

EVEN MORE WONDER YEARS STUFF

I've done a ton of work for the Wonder Years in the last few months to correlate with their new record. I think these two projects are probably the coolest, at least firsts for me. The top is their preorder 7", I created an illustration inspired by the song to be screenprinted on the b-side of the record (plus it's on clear wax making it extra cool). And below that is the hand painted bass drum head Nick will be beating on on tour. Be sure to check them out over the next couple months. The release shows start tommorrow (buy a poster). I've got a slew of other cool projects in the works including a Vivian Girls poster, a pinup for the new PCS anthology and some screenprinted paper bags (the 40 oz kind) for Ed Blammo's Dre Day party.
